Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century and its projected continuation (2). The scientific community largely agrees that most of the observed temperature increase since the middle of the 20th century was caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases, which results from human activity such as fossil fuel burning and deforestation(3). Warming is expected to be strongest in the Arctic(1) There is no substantive debate amongst the scientific community as to whether or not human-made global warming is real, however, political and public debate continues, regarding the legitimacy of global warming.(4)
Around the world, there is an increased awareness of the importance of climate change as a factor in a range of issues(3). Many environmental, economic and social issues find common ground in the form of climate change(1). Individual and political action on climate change can take many forms, most of which have the ultimate goal of limiting and/or reducing the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere (4)
